I thought I would start with Will's room. He'll be just 2 by the time we'll likely move in and I thought it would be the perfect time to move him into a big boy room and tackle one big transition all at once. I chose his room to work on first because it will be fun and colourful, have no seriousness to it and nowhere to really mess up. A good confidence builder!
I like these kid's rooms from Elle Decor:

I also like this and this. I really want to decorate a room that looks like this...
But until then I am thinking about little boy things. This is the layout of Will's room:
A nice size for a little boy's room and a large closet to boot. I knew I wanted a twin bed for him but I just couldn't picture a lonely twin in this large room, so I decided that a pair of twins flanking the window would work best. I also like the versatility of the 2 twin beds; if Will wanted to have a friend sleep over or if we were ever in a crunch for space we could use it.
I liked this bed from Pottery Barn Kids:
And this one from Restoration Hardware Baby and Child:
But then I found this one locally which is available in a twin. It's solid wood, made in BC and about half the price of the others. I will order it unfinished and have to spray it but I will still be ahead and it will have a custom look. Perfect!

When I thought of what to use for inspiration for Will's room I thought of things that he "likes" as a one year old. Well, he likes toilets and also pavement, but something more appropriate to his room would be DOGS. He loves them in all shapes and sizes, "dog" was one of the first things he signed to us (a leg slap), he alerts us to any in our vicinity and covets our own dogs, even our stone "Roxy" on our stoop:
What a nice kiss. That settles it, a dog themed room for a boy who loves dogs. And then I found this fabric:
It was perfect. I had two 24"x24" pillows made and piped in powder blue and two large lumbars in this powder blue geometric pattern to prop them up and pull out the blue, one for each twin bed.
Even these lucky doggies get kisses...
Remember that Karlstad chair I bought from Ikea? Here's what it looks like now:
The drapes are being made as we speak, and they are in this same blue, lighter blue and white striped fabric. They will be grommeted and I think will really pull things together.
With the colour scheme being this celery green and blue palette, I'm debating wall colours and what colour to spray the beds. I think it's going to be a game time decision once I see things in the space.
People are often surprised when I tell them I am starting the design process so early. Choosing these pieces, ordering fabric, having the drapes and pillows made, ordering beds has taken over a month, with at least another month to go for things to arrive. I figure if I tackle one room a month until the house is built I will be through only 6 of them. I will focus on the ones we will use on a regular basis (master bedroom for starters) so we will be able to sit and sleep in comfort, and I'll save the rooms we use less often so I'll still have some fun projects to work on once we're in the new house. They say it's all about the journey and as a designer trapped in a dentist's body I want to enjoy every moment of it!
